Though hairballs are the source of a lot of jokes, they can be a serious problem for cats, potentially blocking their passageway, causing an impaction. The good news is that most hairballs will eventually work their way out and the issue of impaction won't even occur to you.
Hairballs form when your cat grooms himself and swallows the hair. Since hair can't be digested, it will simply gather in the stomach and compact. Eventually, your cat will need to rid himself of the hairball, causing that characteristic gacking sound.
Hairball Symptoms
The presence of a lovely hairball on your carpet or furniture is the most obvious symptom of this condition but your cat may also experience constipation, lethargy or depression, lack of appetite, and a dry, matted coat.
Treating Hairballs
Hairballs do not require the diagnosis of a vet. Like many feline health issues, prevention is the best method of treatment. This includes regular brushing, the use of special hairball food and commercial and home remedies. Most cats love a good brushing and this is a simple way to reduce the amount of hair your cat consumes during his ordinary cleaning.
There are several special formulations of cat food that are designed to reduce the frequency and scope of hairballs. There are also commercially available remedies that can be added to your cat's ordinary food. These gels and granules help the hairballs pass more easily. If you want to go with a home remedy, try adding a small amount of butter (about half a teaspoon) to your cat's food. Some people have also tried canned pumpkin or baby squash. These also can help with constipation and diarrhea, because they contain added fiber.
With some basic precautions, including regular grooming, you'll find that your cat will experience fewer hairballs. In the process, both of you will find your life together far more enjoyable, as your cat is able to live a more leisurely life and you don't have to find one of those unpleasant surprises waiting for you in the entryway, or worse, waiting for you as you make a late night visit to the bathroom.
