Scavenger Hunt Basics - Important Tips For Planning Successful Scavenger Hunts

Purpose

The primary goal of a scavenger hunt is to send participants out with a list of things to find, obtain, photograph, videotape, audio record, etc. The hope is that while they are working together as a team, relationships will be developed.

Publicity Opportunity

Make invitations to your church, business, or organization and give them to everyone who participates or that interacts with the groups in some way. Or create a small thank you card with your contact information. Participants can give a thank you card to everyone who helps them. Even better, invite them to a party or slideshow where the results will be displayed.

Preparing Item Lists

Lists can be as creative and wild as you want them to be. Design your list around a theme or concept:

Ecological, Bible Objects, Occupations, Food, Canned Goods, Prices of items, Animal Tracks, footprints, Photos at History Locations, People, sounds, clothing, church members, Camp Supplies, Items for the needy, recycled materials, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, New Year, Halloween, Noah's Ark Party, old family photos, fruits, vegetables, widgets, Posed Photos, Video, etc.

Protecting Participants

1. Don't let any youth drive - put adults in charge and don't allow horseplay on the roads like "Chinese fire drills". Make sure everyone wears seatbelts or take major points away if they are caught on film without them on. You could also conduct the scavenger hunt on foot. You don't want a participant killed while speeding during your scavenger hunts.

2. Participants must obey all laws and instructions from sponsors.

3. Limit the play area and place people at strategic locations if needed to insure the safety of participants.

4. Make sure each group has a mobile phone and contact numbers for emergency.

Points

1. Set a specific point value for each item on the list.

2. Have a point penalty for each minute late to the final destination or to report back with the items.

3. For Video or photo scavenger hunts, give extra points to groups for having a company, organization, or church logo in every picture. You could also require a Bible, a mascot, or some other object in each picture. Some groups have even been known to have to carry a large teddy bear or other object (a couch) around to be in each picture.

4. Award extra points for having everyone in the group as part of the photo or video.

Planning the Scavenger Hunt - 10 Steps

1. PURPOSE: What is the purpose of your scavenger hunt.
(Is it an icebreaker? For team building? Just for fun?)

2. TYPE: What type of scavenger hunt is it?
(Is it to collect objects? a photo scavenger hunt? A video scavenger hunt? A sound scavenger hunt? Others?)

3. THEME: What is the theme?
(Is it a Pirate's Treasure Hunt? a Superhero Hunt? Aladin's Magic Carpet Hunt? Others?)

4. LOCATION: Where will the hunt take place? What are the boundaries?
(Is it limited to a school or church building? The downtown area? Walking distance? Reconnoiter the location to determine potential problems. Get permission in advance from affected businesses and individuals.)

5. ITEM LIST: What items do participants need to collect?
(Based on your purpose, type of hunt, and theme, make a list of items that can be found in the specified boundaries. Are substitutions allowed?)

6. SCORING: How will points be allocated?
(Are some items worth more than others? Are there points for creativity and quality?)

7. INVITATIONS: Who will be invited to the join in the Scavenger Hunt?
(What do they need to bring? What do they need to wear? Tailor the invitations to your theme.)

8. TEAMS: How will participants be divided into teams?

9. RULES: What are the rules?
(Take into consideration the safety of participants as well as minimizing potential problems.)

10. AWARDS: Determine the location and the time for the awards party.
(How will teams present their items to the judges?)

What to Do When Your Dog Or Cat Won't Eat

Your dog won't eat. Or your cat is a picky eater. So what on earth do you do?

First, a caveat. No animal will willingly starve itself. But ALWAYS have your pet seen by a vet when there's a change in behavior. You need to rule out illness before embarking on solving a pet's eating problem. Be sure to check for a bad tooth as this is often overlooked as a cause of eating issues. The second caveat: Eating problems can be complex and the tips offered here are simplistic. I offer them with 30 years of experience as a dog owner, breeder, handler and fancier in the world of dogs, but you should discuss them with your vet to see if any are a plausible remedy for your pet's situation.

We'll start with dogs, and assuming that your dog is healthy but not a good eater, here are some potential reasons why and ideas for fixing it.

If you feed your dog treats during the day, stop. You want your dog hungry at meal times. If your dog is a show dog, remember that bait should be offered in TINY pieces, it's not meant to be dinner. When it comes to meals, put the dog's food bowl on the floor, give her 10 minutes to eat it, and if it isn't touched, pick it up and put it away. Don't feed again until the next meal, and resist the temptation to give treats. Do this for a whole week because what you're doing here is behavior modification. Remember, a healthy dog won't starve itself to death, but a stubborn, healthy dog could modify YOUR behavior if you cave in.

If you change pet foods frequently, stop. Frequent diet changes can create a finicky eater. The dog learns to "holdout" to see what will be offered next. When you find a nutritious diet your pet will eat, stay with it. If you MUST change the pet's diet, do it gradually over a two week period. Add a small amount of the new diet to the old food, and each day, increase the amount of the new feed while decreasing the amount of the current food. This gradual change will help prevent diarrhea, vomiting and finicky eating.

With picky eaters, it's important to feed a "super premium" brand of dog food. These foods cost a little more and are made with better ingredients, but they are nutritionally dense. This means that your dog is actually eating less in quantity than the cheaper brands bought at grocery stores (these foods have the nutritional value of bark), but because there are more "calories per cup" in a premium food, they're actually getting more nutrition. Look for brands such as Merrick's "Grammy's Pot Pie" (canned food), California Natural, Prarie, Canidae, Flint River, Nutro, Wellness, Eagle Pack Holistic or Nutrisource.

Mixing kibble with a small amount of canned dog food and water will also make it enticing. This next part is important: The single most natural way to increase a pet's appetite is to warm their food because it increases the smell and makes it more appetizing.

Perhaps your dog has a health issue or is on a medication that makes him not want to eat. She's under a vet's care, but the task of getting nutrition into her falls on you. Now what? First, understand that the less a dog eats, the less he WANTS to eat. Add to that the dog who comes to associate food with nausea and you have a real problem, so the sooner you can get your dog to WANT to eat on his own, the better. So much for the obvious.

We'll start with the simplest remedies and work our way up to a radical solution that worked for one of my dogs. Assuming that your dog is on a high quality feed but still not eating, you may need to go to the next step: making dog food taste even better.

You don't want to make these next foods a daily staple, mostly because the high sodium content of many of them would be contra-indicated for dogs in renal failure or with heart issues (if your dog does have kidney issues, check out a really informative web site here.) The following foods have been tried and tested by people in the dog fancy and are suggested ONLY as a means to jump start the appetite in a sick or compromised dog: Sardines, canned cat food, Gerber's baby food - especially turkey or sweet potato, braunschweiger, Limburger Cheese, broth, pureed liver, Dinty Moore Beef Stew, yogurt, cottage cheese/cream cheese, canned mackerel, scrambled eggs with cream cheese, chicken noodle soup - and even this one: hard-boiled eggs smashed up in French Vanilla yogurt, slightly warmed.

Sometimes, you may need to "jump start" an appetite with something so enticing, it's irresistible. Here is the original recipe for "Satin Balls," one of the most requested recipes on Wellpet, Showdogs-L, VetMed, and other popular e-mail lists for serious dog people:

10 pounds of cheap hamburger meat
1 lg. box of Total cereal
1 lg. box oatmeal
1 jar of wheat germ
1 1/4 cup veg oil
1 1/4 cup of unsulfured molasses
10 raw eggs AND shells
10 envelopes of unflavored gelatin
pinch of salt

Mix all ingredients together, much like you would a meatloaf. Divide the batch into 10 quart freezer bags and freeze.Thaw as needed and feed raw! (This is also a good way to put weight on a skinny dog, increase energy, and to alleviate itchy, flaky skin). This isn't a substitute for meals, it's meant to whet a dog's appetite. If the dog is eating this eagerly, start mixing it with kibble gradually. The idea is to wean them off the Satin Balls and onto kibble.

Next, we move on to "fixes" that come in a tube or pill. Remember that the point of these products is to stimulate an appetite and are not long term solutions; We start with Re-Vita whose products are said to be effective for problem appetites; "Pet-Tinic" is a liquid dietary supplement containing iron, copper and 5 essential vitamins. The palable meat-flavored liquid is readily accepted and one "tester" reported that it brought back her pet's appetite almost immediately, Because of its contents, you'll want to have your vet's approval before using this. "Nutri-Cal" is pure nutrition that squeezes out like toothpaste; dogs like its taste and it's a quick way to get nutrition into a dog. When diluted with water, Dyne High Calorie Dietary Supplement can be used to combat dehydration and provide energy because each ounce provides approximately 150 calories containing vitamins and minerals that maintain constant therapeutic blood levels.

If none of the aforementioned tips work, this is where I get pretty serious because my own philosophy is that a lack of appetite is a lousy reason for a dog to die. What you'll read next isn't pleasant - but if you love your dog, you have to get nutrition into her. As far as I know, there are four ways to do this when the dog can't eat on his own: syringe food into the dog's mouth, stuff food down the dog's throat, hook the dog up to an IV, or insert a stomach tube. I've done all of them at one time or another. And they all stink, but they're preferable to the alternative: a dog who wastes away and dies.

Syringing: You'll need a couple of large syringes from your vet. Using canned food; determine the amount your dog needs to sustain his weight, divide that amount in half and spoon that much into a blender (you and this blender will become inseparable over the coming days). Add enough warm water to blend easily into a very fine puree and for each meal, gently syringe the puree into the side of the dog's lips. Or, you can cut to the chase. Pry the dog's mouth open and squeeze the syringe plunger down so that the food trickles to the side and back of the dog's mouth. It takes a bit of time to get the hang of this since you don't want the dog to aspirate food into his lungs. Speak to the dog soothingly and praise him when you're done. Remember, it's not the dog's fault he's unable to eat and it's only temporary until the appetite comes back.

Stuffing: This was my least favorite means of getting food into a dog. It was messy and degrading. In a nutshell, you make "food bombs" that are narrow enough to slide down the back of the dog's throat. These "bombs" are a mixture of wet & dry food that's been pureed into a texture that allows shaping. There are folks out there who are really good at doing this - and some dogs who just don't eat well become so used to eating this way that they'll stand calmly, lift up their little heads and open their mouths like guppies in anticipation for the next "bomb." Since all we care about is getting nutrition into the dog, if this works for you, that's what counts.

IV: A "no brainer." At this point, a dog is so ill that this is pretty much the last resort. It's no substitute for the calories gotten from real food, but sometimes it serves as a band-aid until the dog is back on its feet and able to eat the real thing.

Stomach tube: Proverbially speaking, this is what separates the men from the boys. When I was faced with a dog whose heart medication caused anorexia but who was otherwise healthy, I had but little choice to pull out all the stops. Syringe feeding, food bombs - these were not long term solutions. Guided by my vet, we made an informed decision to insert a stomach tube. Mind you, at the time we thought it would be a short term fix until my dog ate on his own. Keep reading.

The first tube put in was an ugly, brown rubber tube that was SO long, it had to be wrapped around my dog's mid section and secured with a lady's tube top when not in use. I prepared the food as if I was going to syringe it into my dog's mouth, only it was syringed into a tube that had been inserted into his side over the stomach. In less than a week, the dog knew the sound of the blender, knew what was coming and would lie down on his side in preparation for his meal.

Each day before I approached the blender, I always offered the dog his meal in a bowl since it was my fondest desire that the dog eat like a dog. After many weeks, however, I knew this wasn't going to happen. Ever. At this point, my vet and I had a frank discussion about options and he mentioned a permanent tube, one inserted from the inside out. The "Bard" was a gastronomy device made of silicon that was successfully used to feed disabled children but had never been used in canines. My nearly 14 year old Puli would be the first dog to have the slick silicon "button" inserted. It fit flush against his stomach and a little "lid" flicked open like the flip-top portion of a tube of toothpaste. Compared to what I had been working with, it was a Porsche compared to an Edsel and no one else ever knew it was there.

The tube enabled my dog to live a couple of more years. Feeding him took less than five minutes and afterwards, he would run with the other dogs, bark into the wind, enjoy the sun on his back and know that I adored him. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Because of the seemingly radical step we took to ensure this dog's survival, it wasn't something I discussed openly. Too many people out there feel that if a dog can't eat on his own, he's not meant to live. To them I say, "Phooey." The dog wanted to live, to survive and feel the hand of those who loved him rubbing his ears. But he couldn't eat. His spirit was willing and he would have done anything to please me, but this one thing he couldn't do. How then, was I to deny him the one thing I could do to help him?

Cats: Needless to say, cats are not like dogs. They can get liver damage from not eating even for just a day or two. When a cat stops eating, their body will start to use its fat stores as fuel. The old fat stores are mobilized to the liver, which should begin fat burning. But when the fat arrives at the liver, the liver doesn't burn the fat efficiently and it accumulates in the liver.

The resulting liver disorder is known as "hepatic lipidosis", or "fatty liver disease." This condition may be suggested when blood tests show impaired liver function. Getting fatty liver disease is not isolated only to cats, and fasting cats don't always get this condition, they just seem more prone to it when they don't eat.

But according to the Cornell Online Consultant, there are 454 more possible Diagnoses for Feline Anorexia. Wow. A good web site you can visit here explains the different reasons a cat might not be eating, from acid stomach to ulcers and including fatty liver disease. The bottom line, however,is that you have less "wiggle room" when a cat won't eat. Tries these tips:

-Warm the food because warmed food has a stronger smell which will make a cat want to eat.
-Handfeeding: Sit with your cat and talk to her. Offer a little piece of food to her.
-Offer special treats like canned or pouched food instead of dry kibble.
-Offer tuna and cheese or milk or cream, all in small amounts.
-Tasty liquids, like water from tuna packed in water or, rarely, oil. Avoid tuna packed in vegetable broth as itmay contain onions. Try clam juice or low-salt chicken broth. Avoid onions and anything made with bouillan as it's too salty;
-Sprinkle some catnip on the food.

Pull out all the stops and make some Home Made Cat Food with this recipe:
Switch off the protein sources with each batch or two. Switch between:
- Half Pound of minced boneless chicken breast or thigh
- Six Ounces of dark-mean ground turkey or minced turkey
- Half Pound of lean, minced beef
- Half Pound of minced beef, chicken or turkey heart. About three times a week, include one chopped hard-boiled or scrambled egg. Occasionally substitute a five-ounce can of salmon or tuna for the meat. Avoid canned salmon or tuna for cats that are prone to urinary tract infections.

Mix foods together.

There are some drugs that can help stimulate a cat's appetite including Diazepam (Valium). Other drugs to ask your vet about are Periactin (generic name Cyproheptadine), Serax (generic name Oxazepam) and Dalmane (generic name Flurazepam). All have potential side effects so it's important to talk with your vet.

Syringe feeding and feeding tubes as mentioned in the section for dogs is also an option for cats.

Good luck and know that you're not alone. Feeding issues are among the most frustrating of concerns.

Salad Toppings - Top 10 Ways to Make Your Salads More Tasty and Filling!

OK, so summer is approaching very quickly and most of us are turning our attention to getting in shape in time for bathing suit season.  At this time of year, salads become our friends. We turn to them for their delicious lightness, for a quick bite and for their tried and true body shaping qualities.

But uninteresting salads can make for a very dull meal and a very unhappy eater.  And if you don't top a salad the right way, you are going to very hungry, very quickly.

So here my top ten salad toppings to turn your salads from boring to delightful! Some of these tips are useful for eating salads at restaurants and others are for homemade ones.  If you decide to create homemade salads and bring them with you to work, you may want to try those new salad plastic containers that hold the salad in one part and the dressing in another.  That way your salad and salad toppings will be crispy when you decide to eat them.

1. Double the lean protein (turkey, chicken, eggs, fish) - add chicken and turkey or salmon and eggs.  Do this especially if you often feel hungry after your salads.  A little more protein may help you go the extra mile to avoid the vending machine in the afternoon.

2. Add beans, like black, kidney, cannelloni, or garbanzo.  Beans have lots of great complex carbs, fiber and protein.  They also help to fill you up and keep you that way.

3. Create your own dressings as salad toppings. My favorite is a combination of orange juice, balsamic vinegar, and Grey Poupon mustard.  You can add some olive oil to make it even richer.  I especially like this dressing with spinach leaves.

4. Add some fruit.  Fruit can be great salad toppings.  It can turn a boring salad into a sweet sensation.  My favorites are: orange slices (fresh or canned), strawberries, blueberries, and pineapple slices (fresh or canned). If you are using canned, sugar-free fruit, use the juice to mix into the salad dressing.

5. Add some hummus, Baba-Ganoush or mashed white beans to your salad or salad dressing.  This may sound odd, but it is actually quite delightful.

6. Make your own glazed nuts as salad toppings.  Dry roast some walnuts or pecans and then add some honey or maple syrup to the pan to coat the nuts.  Take them out of the pan and separate them before they cool, so they don't clump.  The nuts become a flavorful addition to a boring salad.  This is great if you have a sweet tooth that you are trying to control.

7. Add cooked diced sweet potatoes or regular potatoes. Dice some potatoes into squares.  Coat them in some olive oil and fresh rosemary and roast them until they are soft. Then toss them over mesclun greens.  I especially like this salad with roasted asparagus spears and sliced eggs.

8. Add apples and pears.  Cube up some apples and/or pears and sprinkle these on top of your salad.  I especially like to mix apples and pears with walnuts and have them over spinach.

9. Skip the leaves.  Chop up tomatoes, cucumbers, and avocadoes.  Sprinkle with salt, pepper, olive oil and lemon juice.  Enjoy.

10. Change up your vinegars and oils.  Spend some time in the oil and vinegar aisle at your local health food store.  A new vinegar or oil can really change up your dressings and make for tasty salad toppings.  Try mixing apple cider vinegar with apple juice and spicy mustard.  Or rice wine vinegar with mirin wine (in the oriental section) and orange juice.  Another suggestion: toasted sesame oil and rice wine vinegar with orange slices over cabbage greens.

Let me know if you have any other great suggestions! Thanks and Enjoy.

Shake the Insurance Presentation Butterflies!

Almost all types of sales presentations can initially cause your insides to churn. I remember my first presentation to list a house for sale. I made it through without wetting my pants. However, when I made the transition to insurance sales, things changed. For my first presentation, I expected a rough train ride, but got an hour-long roller coaster jolt with no seatbelt or tranquilizers. I was stuttering, squinting, shaking, and squirming, with every four-letter word racing through my mind why I should get out now. Extreme Shock Treatment at the ultimate level.

Your insurance sales manager will tell you that shaking the insurance presentation butterflies is simply a matter of giving more presentations. WRONG! Many insurance sales managers will lose up to 75% of their sales representatives in the next 12 months. There are two main reasons, with each having about an equal share. The first reason is that insurance trainees never receive enough personal sales training and quality leads to make a survival income. The other is that in many trainees, insurance presentation pressure builds and builds until they mentally and financially cannot take it anymore.

SOME CAUSES

There are many causes, and until the main ones are uncovered and resolved, your mind, body, and pocketbook will suffer. Lack of sales experience is a minor one and never the root. Dig deeper for the real cause. It could be that you are trying to sell outside your comfort zone. Starting out with prospecting for high-income clients can be very unproductive. Many insurance agents carry with them information about 20 different products. To change prospects to clients, they expect you to know your product inside and out. If you are using cold calling by telephone to find prospects, the hundreds of no answers places a very negative attitude in your mind. In addition, you cannot use a sales presentation that sounds canned and makes you feel or sound uncomfortable.

Selling insurance should be virtually objection free, not a battle between you and your prospects.

The goal is to keep your mind relaxed, your body comfortable, and your presentation easy and rewarding. It is really not all that hard.

SOME REMEDIES

Insurance sales are a result of self management. Do NOT expect your sales manager to help you. First, you must get your mind and body in order. You want confidence in yourself and inner comfort and ease in talking to others. The easiest way to begin is by giving yourself short daily consistent shots. Start to read an Ebook from the masters on building confidence and trust and conquering your fears. Two of the best books, now in ebook form, is "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill and "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. There is a whole library of internet ebook choices to inspire you.

A MARKETING PLAN

A change will do you good. Concentrate your efforts on people who are in your comfort zone. If you used to do construction work, obtain lists of electricians, carpenters, roofers, or repair people. Whatever your choice, start with people you are comfortable with before expanding. Next, choose two or three products only that fit this market. Call yourself an expert in this area, and make sure your product knowledge shows it. Lastly, get rid of the baby blanket... the company-canned speech. Read internet articles on sales skills, tips, and presentations will help you develop your own. Turn the butterflies into sales dollars. Before you walk into your prospect's door take a minute. Picture yourself already making the sale. Now go for it, the presentation is only a formality.

Plunk Your Magic Twanger, Froggy

There was a time when all television shows were in black and white and there were far fewer channels than we have nowadays; and back in the 1950's there was a popular children's variety show called Andy's Gang. There may be a few of you out there you actually remember it. For the rest of you, perhaps I could take you on a trip back to a time and place where Froggy ruled supreme and Midnight the Cat would be content to play her violin along with squeaky the mouse.

This show was a real Saturday morning treat for most kids. I say most because it wasn't to everyone's taste. You see Froggy the Gremlin, who was the most popular character in the show, would love to wreck things. Usually a guest speaker would be invited on to the show and Froggy would then go and ruin their carefully prepared speech. With this seemingly evil intent and Froggy's gravel voice, a few children found him a bit scary and even gave some nightmares. My theory is that the really nice kids - the ones who would never be naughty - found Froggy a little upsetting, but the kids who could sometimes be naughty - the vast majority - found his rejection of authority refreshing...and very funny.

The show would kick off with a rendition of Buster Brown Shoes, the sponsor's song. This was followed by a mix of live stunts involving presenter Andy Devine and the various puppet characters and filmed adventures of an Indian boy called Rhama of the Jungle.

Andy's Gang was actually quite bizarre and bemused kids and entertained them in equal measure. There were often real live animals in the show, including lions and monkeys that would be dressed up silly costumes. The real star of the show, however, was Froggy the Gremlin. He was a true rebel. The show's guests would give a lecture to the studio audience (in fact there was usually no live audience, just canned footage and sound) about an earnest subject such as how to bake a cake or how to catch fish and froggy would constantly interrupt and put words in the guest's mouth.

For instance:

Guest: Once I have mixed the custard I....

Froggy: ...put it on my head

Guest: ...put it on my...

And, of course the guest takes up the suggestion before realising what she has done. Froggy wins again!

Froggy the Gremlin's rebellious streak was loved by most kids. Some have suggested, presumably with tongue in cheek, that the generation of kids that watched Froggy turned into the rebellious teenagers of the late 60's and Froggy was a subliminal influence on them. One day we might see a thesis with the title "Froggy the Gremlin's Influence on History".

One of the many bizarre happenings in this show was the catchphrase Andy Levine used when he wanted Froggy to appear: "Plunk your magic twanger, Froggy!". What the verb plunk and the noun twanger mean is not certain, but the saying may have its roots in an earlier incarnation of Andy's Gang called Buster Brown Gang, presented Ed McConnell where Froggy once played a guitar.

If adults find today's kids tv a little baffling, just think of what the 1950's grown-ups thought of Andy's Gang....nothing changes!

Picking Up Women

Picking up women is something that you can become a natural at with just a little practice. You'll need a little courage and belief in yourself to get started. Here are some tips for picking up women you can use right away.

Plan ahead. They say that practice makes perfect and it's no different for picking up women. Take a little time to go through the different stages of the approach: the initial eye contact, saying hello, a little flirting while you have a short conversation, then getting her phone number. You don't have to sound canned; just know what you're going to say before you start.

Take action. Too many guys overthink a situation. They hesitate and then the opportunity for picking up women that are hot is gone. Don't' stop to wonder if you 'good enough' to get the beautiful women. Just go for it!

Stay in control. A lot of guys get stuck on the idea that the woman has all the power when it comes to picking up women. That's just a problem of perception. Once you know that she's attracted to you, use that to your advantage to keep the power in the relationship. Flirt, play, and get her phone number, then move away. She'll wonder why you're doing that and wonder if she's done something wrong. She'll be chasing you instead of the other way around.

Make yourself interesting. Share something that you're passionate about. All people are naturally drawn to someone who has a passion. Picking up women is so simple when the women are drawn to you because you're sharing your interests. You're more interesting than other guys.

Don't talk for too long on the phone. When you call her up, don't talk too long. Get her laughing and interested, then end the conversation. You'll leave her wanting to be with you.

Remember these tips the next time you're in the mood for picking up women. You'll find that your success rate increases and you'll have more beautiful women for dating and sex. Enjoy!

Your Diabetic Dog - Can Canine Diabetes Be Managed With Natural Remedies For Dogs?

It seems like every time you turn around, you hear something about herbs for dogs or natural remedies for dogs. If you have a diabetic dog, you're probably wondering if there's a natural way to treat diabetes in dogs. Is insulin the only answer? Read on to learn more.

Diet For A Diabetic Dog

Obviously, you need to cut out any food that's high in sugar. But that's not as easy as it sounds, as sugar isn't the only problem. Did you know that most dry dog foods, including the prescription diets your vet sells, are made mostly from grains?

What's wrong with that? The problem with grains is that they've very high in carbohydrates, which your pet's body breaks down quickly into glucose. This glucose is absorbed into the bloodstream all at once, cause a spike in blood sugar levels.

Proteins and fats are also broken down into glucose, but the digestion process takes longer. This means that glucose is released into the blood over a longer period of time, which helps to regulate blood glucose levels. This is why you'll want to switch your dog over to either a high-quality canned food, or start feeding her a homemade diet.

What About Exercise?

Exercise is a great natural way to regulate glucose levels in the blood. However, you need to be careful when exercising a diabetic pet, as hypoglycemia can result if the exercise is too vigorous.

Talk to your vet about setting up an exercise program for your pet with canine diabetes. He or she will tell you that consistency is the key:

  • Exercise your pet at the same time every day.

  • Keep the exercise sessions the same length every day.

  • Start out slowly if you've both been couch potatoes.

  • Fenugreek helps to slow down carbohydrate absorption, and may stimulate insulin production.

  • Astragalus is an old stand-by in Chinese traditional medicine. Research has proven its effectiveness in regulating glucose levels. It can also prevent or slow the formation of cataracts, which are common in canines with diabetes, as well as boosting your pet's immune system.

  • Goat's rue can lower glucose levels without causing hypoglycemia. It's another herb that may reduce your pet's risk of cataracts, and may also prevent kidney damage.

  • Bilberry is thought to prevent cataracts, and many herbalists believe this herb can even help to reverse them.

The mineral chromium is also essential for regulating the amount of glucose in the blood. It can also prevent insulin resistance, which is usually a precursor of type 2 diabetes. This is the most common form of this disease among canines.
